Alston & Bird has bolstered its IP Litigation Group with the addition of partners Edward Poplawski and Olivia Kim in the firm’s Los Angeles office. With extensive intellectual property and complex patent litigation experience, Edward and Olivia have practiced together for over 20 years and bring a breadth of knowledge to the firm’s existing bench of strong IP litigators.

Edward focuses his practice on patent litigation, notably district court jury trials and proceedings. He is acknowledged as one of the nation’s leading trial lawyers and has litigated and tried high-profile and bet-the-company cases involving patent infringement, trade secret misappropriation, trademark and copyright infringement, and antitrust violations. His clients have included Fortune 100 companies, emerging Silicon Valley companies, and multinationals. He has litigated cases involving a range of technologies, including semiconductors, medical devices, data transmission systems, mobile phone systems, and consumer electronics.

As a trial lawyer, Olivia has handled matters involving various technologies from pharmaceuticals to computer hardware and software, including biotechnology, clinical testing, medical devices, biometric sensors, internet payment systems, mobile phone systems, network security, and plasma display panels. She has advised clients on all aspects of IP litigation, including claim construction briefing and hearings, inventor and expert depositions and expert reports, the drafting and negotiation of settlement agreements, and substantive and discovery motion practice.

Following the recent additions of partners Erik Carlson and Theresa Conduah in Los Angeles and Century City, the arrival of Edward and Olivia deepens Alston & Bird’s West Coast IP litigation presence and the practice’s commitment to serving the IP needs of clients worldwide.

Alston & Bird’s team of more than 80 intellectual property litigation lawyers assists clients as both plaintiffs and defendants in patent infringement matters. The team has litigated IP disputes in the federal and state courts of at least 45 states, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and International Trade Commission. These attorneys regularly partner with attorneys from the Patents Group to coordinate post-grant review proceedings before the Patent Trial & Appeal Board.
