On 8 October 2020, the renowned Viennese commercial law firm Binder Grösswang and the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (CAIML) of the Vienna University of Technology began a cooperation with the aim of strengthening joint projects, best practice and interdisciplinary issues between IT and law regarding the application and challenges of artificial intelligence. The cooperation agreement was signed in the office of Binder Grösswang by Dr. Ivo Rungg, partner at the law firm and leading expert in digital law, and Mag. Walter Palmetshofer, a specialist in innovative combinations and applications of AI and ML.

Goals of the cooperation

The CAIML, founded by the Vienna University of Technology in December 2021, aims to combine research activities in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning, both in theory and in their practical applications. The cooperation with Binder Grösswang will cover issues related to the use of AI solutions and AI technologies, as well as key topics such as technical solutions in the context of legal regulation of AI, ethical issues, data protection and copyright, and the responsible use of AI in business.

"The collaboration with CAIML is an important step in our firm's AI strategy. Together with the leading researchers at the Vienna University of Technology, we will be able to better understand the technical aspects of the challenges posed by AI and use this knowledge for the benefit of our clients. In this context, it is important for us to consider the ethical and social implications of new technologies, as well as the legal implications of digitalisation and artificial intelligence. This enables us to provide our clients with legal advice on the latest developments," said Ivo Rungg of Binder Grösswang.

Walter Palmetshofer of CAIML adds: "With Binder Grösswang, we have gained a strong partner to help us analyse the dynamic legal framework and challenges in the development of AI-based applications and technical research. Together, we can ensure that AI technologies are not only powerful, but also used in a legally compliant and responsible manner."
