Maiwald is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sun Jin Lee, Sebastian Herzog und Dr. Tobias Philipp as partners. They will take up their new roles at the start of the new year. With these new appointments Maiwald has further strengthened its team at partner level in the growth segments pharma & biotech, mobility & energy as well as medical and communications technologies.
Dr. Sun Jin Lee specialises in the fields of genetic engineering, biochemistry, biotechnology and molecular and cell biology. As well as drafting new patent applications and conducting patent grant proceedings and oppositions, Dr. Lee uses her expertise to advise clients on strategic issues across a wide range of pharmaceutical and biotechnological areas.
After completing her diploma thesis at the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology, Dr. Sun Jin Lee conducted neurobiology research at Yale University, where she also obtained her doctorate in molecular genetics and nephrology in 2009. She held a postdoctoral position at Yale University until 2014, where she worked on stem cell biology, genetics and developmental biology. Dr. Lee is the recipient of several awards, including a Scholarship for Excellence from the Bavarian State Government. She was admitted as a European Patent Attorney in 2019 and joined the law firm of Maiwald in the same year. In 2023, she was admitted as a European Patent Litigator (UPC).
Sebastian Herzog has been a patent attorney at Maiwald since 2018. He specialises in German, European and international intellectual property law. He advises and assists clients in obtaining, defending, enforcing and contesting IP rights in the fields of physics, electrical engineering and information technology, communications technology, medical technology and mechanical engineering as well as artificial intelligence and digitalisation.
After completing his studies in electrical engineering and information technology at the Technical University of Munich, Sebastian Herzog studied ‘Law for Patent Attorneys’ at the University of Hagen until 2016. He was admitted as a European Patent Attorney in 2018.
As a mechanical engineer, Dr. Tobias Philipp primarily supports companies of all sizes from start-ups to large corporations that are operating in the fields of automotive engineering and mechanical and plant engineering in obtaining, defending, enforcing and contesting intellectual property rights in Germany, Europe and worldwide. For more than a decade he has taken a keen interest in the complex of topics relating to digitalisation and Industry 4.0. Dr. Philipp’s activities include patent application proceedings before the German Patent and Trademark Office and the European Patent Office as well as opposition and appeal proceedings. He also prepares expert’s reports in the areas of freedom-to-operate, validity and infringement, besides holding regular lectures for start-ups and students. He has responsibility for UPC-related topics at Maiwald.
Alongside his mechanical engineering studies at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, Dr. Philipp completed a degree in general engineering at the Ecole Centrale in Paris as part of a double degree programme. In 2013, he earned his doctorate in the field of production engineering at the Technical University of Munich. Following a stint as research assistant at the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) at the Technical University of Munich and at the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology, Dr. Philipp worked as a patent examiner at the European Patent Office. He afterwards studied ‘Law for Patent Attorneys’ at the University of Hagen. He was admitted as German Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2019, and in 2023 to the UPC. Dr. Philipp has been a patent attorney at Maiwald since 2021.
