The Official Gazette of Nicaragua has published the new General Law of Tourism in Official Journal No. 141, which will regulate and promote tourism activities in all its forms.
This new law repeals several previous laws, including the Law Creating INTUR, the Law on Sustainable Rural Tourism, and the Law for the Development of Tourist Marina, among others related to the sector.
As a result, the Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism (INTUR) has been established as the governing body for tourism activities. This organization is responsible for formulating and implementing policies, plans, and strategic projects to promote Nicaragua as a tourist destination both nationally and internationally. Its key functions include:
- Promoting and overseeing investments in tourism infrastructure.
- Coordinating with local and regional entities to ensure the preservation of natural and cultural heritage.
- Encouraging tourism competitiveness through innovation and the use of new technologies.
- Regulating and classifying tourism service providers to ensure the quality of offerings.
National Tourism Registry
The new law establishes the National Tourism Registry (RNT), a mandatory mechanism for all tourism service providers in Nicaragua. This registry is essential for operating legally in the country, allowing operators to obtain the Tourism Operations License. INTUR will oversee compliance with this regulation, ensuring that service providers maintain the quality and legality of their services.
Who Are Tourism Service Providers?
Tourism service providers are individuals or legal entities whose primary economic activities include areas such as accommodation, food services, transportation, tour guides, travel agencies, and more. These activities are considered essential for the development of tourism in the country and are regulated to ensure their quality and compliance with national standards.
Tourism service providers will also need to register with the RNT under the established modalities or enter into agreements with national companies of the same nature that are registered and authorized according to the law, with prior notification of such agreements to INTUR.
