Stikeman Elliott has more real estate lawyers inducted as Canadian Fellows in the American College of Mortgage Attorneys than any other Canadian law firm

Stikeman Elliott is pleased to announce that four of its real estate lawyers are Fellows in the American College of Mortgage Attorneys (ACMA). This represents the most ACMA members from one Canadian law firm.

A recent addition to the College, Michael Dyck of our Calgary office was formally admitted on September 25, 2021 as an Alberta member to the College. He joins partners Mario Paura (Toronto), Douglas Klaassen (Toronto) and Stefan Fews (Montréal), who are all current members of ACMA.

Mario Paura, Head of the Real Estate Group in the Toronto office and Co-Head of the National Real Estate Group, was elected at ACMA’s Annual Business Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri over the weekend for a three-year term to the College’s Board of Regents. Members of the Board of Regents are elected by membership and are responsible for governing the College. In total, there are only 25 Regents representing a wide geographic area across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Mario is also the current Ontario Provincial Chair to ACMA.

“As a group, we are so proud of this achievement,” said Mario Paura. “Having the most lawyers inducted in the College than any other Canadian law firm is a true testament to the expertise and dedication of our national real estate practice. It reaffirms our position as leaders in commercial real estate law, as well as our commitment to our clients’ success.

“On a personal note, I’m honoured to be elected to the Board of Regents,” Mario adds.

ACMA was formed in 1974 and is comprised of 500 lawyers across North America who are experts in mortgage law. To be elected to the College, members must have substantial experience in real estate law, share a commitment to giving back to their profession, improving and reforming laws and procedures affecting real estate secured transactions, and raising the level of professionalism of lawyers practicing in this area. They must have distinguished themselves as practitioners in the field of real estate mortgage law through their skills and practice experience, as well as bar association activities, publications, lecturing, authoring articles and program materials, participation in the legislative process, and writing briefs and/or arguing cases that are significant to mortgage transactions.
