About

Provided by Linklaters

Our Japan team advises on complex cross-border fund formation, which typically involves the structuring and setting up of an overseas fund (eg in the Caymans, Singapore or Luxembourg) and advising on the fund’s registration and offering in Japan. We have carved out a niche in the high-end segment of the investment fund market by focusing on complex, multijurisdictional transactions, and differentiate ourselves from both domestic/international law firms that are dedicated to commoditized filing-type work.

We not only advise major asset managers but also Japanese institutional investors in response to the growing trend amongst this class of investors to look for overseas investment opportunities. We are able to provide each client with innovative and high quality solutions that are tailored to their specific needs.

We derive our competitive advantage through the quality of our mixed team of Japanese lawyers (all of whom are bilingual) and international lawyers, regulatory expertise and access to the firm’s global network. The fund management industry in Japan is highly regulated and requires in-depth Japanese legal knowledge. This is something that international competitors still find hard to deliver, whilst domestic competitors lack the depth and breadth of our global coverage. As a result, clients have turned to us for seamless legal advice.
