AMLC opened in June 2018 with four lawyers: two partners (Wes McMillan and Greg Allen) and two associates. In only six years, the firm has grown to three partners (with Kaitlyn Meyer joining the partnership in 2023), three counsel, seven associates and an articling student. The firm’s significant expansion is a testament to its dedicated client base and solid reputation with the bench and bar.
AMLC’s main practice areas are: business & contract disputes; shareholders & directors disputes; real estate litigation; complex strata litigation; construction litigation; municipal litigation; defamation; appellate litigation; and professional & administrative law.
The firm has particular strength in real estate litigation.AMLC lawyers have written and taught courses for Realtors in British Columbia, as well as acted as counsel for the Real Estate Errors and Omissions Insurance Corporation.Moreover, AMLC’s Wes McMillan has acted on numerous leading decisions in the area of real estate law.
AMLC also has a distinct expertise in shareholders' remedies, municipal law and administrative law. The firm has a strong appellate advisory and appellate advocacy practice, with its lawyers appearing regularly at the British Columbia Court of Appeal. Further, the firm often appears in the Supreme Court of Canada for intervenors in public interest litigation.Since opening in 2018, counsel from AMLC have appeared at the Supreme Court of Canada in eight cases, with all three partners also having made appearances at the Supreme Court of Canada prior to AMLC opening.
Recent real estate cases: AMLC’s Wes McMillan has acted on numerous leading decisions in the area of real estate law. Most recently, in 1155204 B.C. Ltd. v NV Highway Properties Ltd., 2024 BCSC 248, Wes and Nojan Kamoosi successfully represented the potential purchaser of a development site in North Vancouver, which was awarded the return of its $1.35 million deposit. Earlier this year, in Zheng v Anderson Square Holdings Ltd., 2024 BCSC 216, Wes and Mia Stewart, as well as Nerissa Yan of Yan Muirhead LLP, obtained judgment of over $13 million for more than 30 putative pre-sale purchasers in a development in Richmond, BC known as "ALFA". In Luminary v Fyfe, 2021 BCSC 167; 2022 BCCA 185, Wes acted for the plaintiffs, Luminary Holding Corp. and Kevin Dunn, in this leading case concerning the obligations of a realtor to a purchaser of property and implied agency.
Recent corporate and commercial cases: In Kim v Argo Ventures, 2024 BCSC 763, Greg and Kaitlyn acted for an investor in the Olympic Village development, who was seeking returns on his substantial investment against a developer who had promised certain investment incentives. In Short v Ewachniuk, 2021 BCSC 994Wes and Kaitlyn acted for a businessman, who, along with a disbarred lawyer, established and grew a marina in Richmond, BC. The court found that the opposing party’s conduct was oppressive and that, in the circumstances, his estate should purchase the client’s shares in the business for $1.45 million. In Hirakawa v Bonner et al, 2021 BCSC 2387, Greg represented an offshore investor in successfully obtaining a short notice injunction to prevent the voting of shares over which AMLC’s client claimed a beneficial interest.
Recent municipal law cases: In Revelstoke (City) v Gelowitz, 2023 BCCA 139, Greg Allen acted for the City of Revelstoke in a case involving a novel duty of care analysis with respect to personal injury claims against a public authority.
Since opening its doors in 2018, Allen / McMillan has received recognition as one of British Columbia’s leading litigation firms. In 2024, the Legal 500 recognized AMLC as an Elite Boutique firm for dispute resolution in British Columbia as well as Wes McMillan and Greg Allen as leading individuals.
