Debbie is a Solicitor Advocate and a Law Society of Scotland Accredited Specialist in Family Law. She advises in relation to the full spectrum of family law matters, including separation, divorce and financial provision. She is experienced in dealing with complex, and / or high value assets, as well as cases with an international element. She also has considerable expertise in relation to cases involving children.
Debbie is a collaborative lawyer and a Law Society of Scotland Accredited Family Law Mediator. She brings the skills required to collaborate and mediate successfully into her everyday practice making her approach both practical and client focussed. Clients appreciate her warm and straightforward attitude as well as her ability to demystify complex legal issues.
Despite her obvious passion and preference for alternative dispute resolution, Debbie is also a tenacious litigator, when required. She has extensive Court of Session and Sheriff Court experience obtaining successful outcomes for clients.
Debbie also has first-hand experience and expertise of the criminal justice system having previously worked as a criminal defence agent. She is, therefore, exceptionally well placed to provide expert advice to those who find themselves in that arena, especially in the context of family law proceedings. Unfortunately, during a relationship breakdown parties can find themselves accused of or being the victim of domestic abuse and it is reassuring for clients to obtain sensitive and appropriate advice in those circumstances.
Trained Bruce Short Solicitors, qualified 2012; Blackadders Solicitors 2012 – 2016; BTO Solicitors 2016 to present.

Debbie volunteers and provides legal advice to Shared Parenting Scotland and drafted its recently re published guide Representing Yourself in a Scottish Family Court 2021. Debbie also enjoys travel and the gym.
