Career
Josh Sterling is a leading practitioner in commodities and derivatives law. He helps banks, asset managers, fintechs, corporations, and several large derivatives exchanges successfully address enforcement, regulatory, and transactional matters of strategic importance to their businesses.
Before joining Jones Day, Josh was the Director of the CFTC’s Market Participants Division. As part of CFTC leadership, he played an instrumental role in completing the remaining rulemakings required by the Dodd-Frank Act, as well as in charging and settling several groundbreaking enforcement actions. Josh was also responsible for the examination, rulemaking, and enforcement referral programs for the 3,300-plus banks, intermediaries, and asset managers worldwide that are registered with the CFTC.
Josh regularly assists derivatives exchanges, market participants, and fintechs with obtaining approvals for new product and business initiatives through engagement with the regulators and by executing on their strategic business initiatives. His work includes assisting clients with developing new products and services in the renewable energy space.
Josh has extensive experience representing clients in CFTC and SEC investigations, as well as in examinations of their trading activities and regulatory compliance brought by the National Futures Exchanges and other regulatory bodies. He has successfully resolved several cases for corporate and individual defendants.
