Practice Areas

Matthew is a partner in the London dispute resolution practice and is co-head of Freshfields’ global investigations group and its corporate crime practice.

Matthew is a vastly experienced and highly respected investigations and financial crimes expert. He has led a significant number of major corporate multi-jurisdictional investigations for blue chip clients arising from compliance issues and allegations of bribery and corruption, fraud, money laundering and human rights abuses, such matters often being high-profile or precedent setting. He is known for his calm, supportive, focussed and practical approach. In addition to advising clients on compliance and internal investigations, he is experienced in dealing with external regulators and authorities all over the world, including matters before the UK Serious Fraud Office.

Matthew also has significant experience acting for clients in large scale litigation. He recently led the team advising G4S Ltd in defending high-profile shareholder litigation following its DPA. He led the team that successfully represented WEX Inc in a landmark $1.7bn contractual dispute in the English Commercial Court arising from the Covid-19 pandemic, which won the team Commercial Litigation Team of the Year. He was also recently proud to lead a team acting for Kate Wilson, pro bono, in a landmark case in the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, which resulted in a finding of a “formidable” list of human rights breaches by the Metropolitan Police following Kate’s relationship with an undercover police officer.
