Career
Megan Sowards Newton draws upon more than two decades of experience in government and politics in her practice as an election lawyer. As a former General Counsel to Jeb Bush’s Presidential Campaign and the National Republican Senatorial Committee and Deputy General Counsel to Mitt Romney’s 2012 Presidential Campaign, Megan has a keen understanding of the technical aspects of federal election law and its practical application. She advises clients including presidential campaigns, dozens of U.S. Senate and House campaigns, high-profile Super PACs, and tax-exempt organizations engaged in the political and issues debate. Megan regularly represents clients before the Federal Election Commission and the House and Senate Ethics Committees.
In addition, Megan counsels corporations and trade associations regarding their engagement in the political process, including compliance with the Lobbying Disclosure Act, state lobbying laws, the Foreign Agents Registration Act, and pay-to-play laws. She has designed compliance programs for public companies and lobbying firms and has handled GAO audits of lobbying compliance. Prior to law school, Megan served as a press secretary and speechwriter for three U.S. Senators and at the U.S. Department of State.
