Rafael heads the Litigation and Arbitration practice group in Spain. Over the course of circa 25 years of professional career at Freshfields, and circa 30 years of overall experience in dispute resolution, Rafael has built a strong reputation in the market and acquired deep expertise in complex mandates. He has broad commercial experience, focusing on contractual disputes, product liability, public law and international arbitration. He advises on refinancings, out of court restructurings and insolvency proceedings. He is an expert on regulatory issues and administrative disputes with the Spanish authorities, advising on a broad range of matters governed by Spanish public law. He regularly acts for major financial institutions and investment banks, on contentious and non-contentious matters, as well as for national and international companies across sectors, with a special focus on financial institutions, pharmaceutical, media and energy / renewable sectors. He is a member of the firm’s Financial Institutions Disputes Group.
His antitrust litigation experience includes defending clients from damages claims arising from antitrust infringements, such as Volvo Renault in the Trucks cartel case.
Rafael has a law degree from Universidad Pontificia de Comillas (ICADE), Spain.
He was elected to the partnership in 2005.
