Ricardo Chacón

Career

Ricardo Chacón is the Managing Partner at ECIJA Mexico. He also leads the Corporate/M&A areas, as well as Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT), and Sports Law at the Firm. In this regard, he has a long track record of more than 28 years of experience in corporate and commercial law, mergers and acquisitions, project financing, technology law, telecommunications, and entertainment.

He has advised many national and international clients, especially North American, European, and Asian multinationals in various matters and transactions. He is notable for having structured complex transactions in corporate matters and project financing, with a focus on industries such as information technology (IT), Fintech, telecommunications, fashion, sports, e-sports, and entertainment, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare, among others. In this sense, Ricardo is distinguished in the Mexican legal sector for having led the establishment of corporate vehicles and commercial agreements, as well as alliances with Fintech, Edtech, and Insurtech companies, among other technological firms and startups. He also stands out for his expertise in corporate and technological advice for professional football clubs in the Mexican Football Federation’s First Division.

He is the author of the Mexican chapter on telecommunications in the annual publication, “Telecommunications Law and Practice,” compiled by Colin Long (Sweet & Maxwell, London). Additionally, he is the co-author of numerous publications, including “Fintech Series in Mexico: regulation of an innovation ecosystem” (ECIJA, 2022), Fintech Sector LATAM, (ECIJA, 2021) and “Metaverse Series in Mexico” (ECIJA, 2022).

He studied Law at Universidad Panamericana (UP) in Mexico. He completed a Master of Laws (LLM) at the University of Texas in Austin, USA; a Master’s in Corporate Law and a Master’s in Legal Sciences at Universidad Panamericana. He is currently a Doctoral candidate in Law at the same university.

Ricardo also holds a Postgraduate degree in Corporate-Economic Law from Universidad Panamericana; a Postgraduate in Telecommunications from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) and completed a Postgraduate in International Commercial Transactions at Escuela Libre de Derecho, Mexico City. He completed the Program of Instruction for Lawyers at Harvard University, USA.

Ricardo is an active member of the Mexican Bar Association, A.C. (“BMA”), the International Bar Association (IBA), the American Bar Association (ABA), LegalMondo, and the International Association of Young Lawyers (“AIJA”), where he was honored as an “Honorary Member” after more than 13 years of involvement, having served as a member of the Executive Committee, National Representative for Mexico, and Vice President of the Energy and Telecommunications Commission.

He has been a professor of Negotiation and Project Financing (“Project Finance”) at Universidad Panamericana (“UP”), and teaches at the Master’s in Corporate Law program at the same university. He is an examiner in professional exams for the Master’s in Corporate Law and Master’s in Economic Law at Universidad Panamericana (“UP”). He has also taught at Universidad La Salle (“ULSA”), where he lectured on Economic Competition, Corporate Law, and Commercial Law.

He is fluent in Spanish and English.
