Career
Rob Roy Smith is the Managing Partner for the firm's Seattle office and co-team leader of the firm’s Native American Practice Group. Mr. Smith exclusively practices federal Indian law on behalf of Indian tribes and tribal businesses. Rob is dedicated to helping his Indian tribal clients achieve their goals while striving to find the best legal and business solutions that meet their needs.
As both general counsel and special legal counsel, he has consistently obtained positive outcomes for his Indian tribal clients that have directly benefitted tribal communities, including: protecting tribal sovereign immunity; advancing civil rights; securing treaty rights; and obtaining taxable and tax-free financing for diverse tribal economic development projects.
Rob has been named a Super Lawyer for the Washington State Bar, one of the Best Lawyers in America for Indian law, and a Law360 Rising Star in Native American Law, and has been a recipient of the firm’s pro bono awards. He is licensed to practice in the courts of Washington, Oregon and Idaho; the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals; U.S. Tax Court; the U.S. Supreme Court; and in numerous Tribal Courts nationwide. Rob is an avid marathon runner, having completed more than 40 marathons and one ultra-marathon since 2007.
