Alex Goodman KC’s broad practice encompasses planning, environment, public law, human rights, immigration, discrimination, local government, climate change, habitats and public inquiries. Three recent examples of his work are:
- Acting for the successful appellant in the Supreme Court in R(Day) v Shropshire [2023] 2 W.L.R. 599 (quashing a planning permission).
- A successful appeal in the Court of Appeal relating to compensation under the Human Rights Act 1998 for destitute migrants (R (ASY) v SSHD [2024] EWCA Civ 373).
- Representing thirteen core participants at the Brook House Inquiry (a statutory inquiry into abuse in detention concluding in 2023).
Alex acts for anyone: developers, individuals, local authorities, central government, NGOs etc.
He was awarded the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Outstanding Achievement award in 2021 and was ‘Highly Commended’ for the Halsbury Rule of Law Award at the LexisNexis UK 2023 Awards as part of the Brook House inquiry team.
Alex wrote the Atkins Court Forms edition on Common Land and Village Greens and is currently writing a book on human rights law. Alex helped set up Medical Justice, is a former councillor at the London Borough of Camden. He is the Joint Head of Landmark's Public and Administrative Law group. As a fellow of the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law Alex has worked on the constitutions of Myanmar, Palestine and The Gambia. He is currently instructed on climate change cases in South America and East Africa.
