Andrew Port is Co-Managing Partner of the firm’s San Francisco and Walnut Creek offices and is the Chair of Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani’s national maritime practice. Andy’s practice has focused on the maritime industry for almost 40 years. He represents vessel owners, operators, charterers, and their underwriters in litigation and claims involving wrongful death and personal injury, collisions and allisions, cargo damage, and hull damage. Andy also represents vessel interests in loading and discharge disputes, charter party and other commercial maritime disputes, toxic tort and occupational disease litigation, and governmental investigations. He has substantial experience in all aspects of litigation in both federal and state courts and is recommended counsel by the International Group of P&I Clubs for occupational disease claims. As such, he represents shipowners in their California asbestos, hearing loss and chemical exposure litigation. He has also represented fishing and excursion craft operators and their underwriters in casualty litigation and pleasure craft builders/manufacturers in design and manufacturing defect litigation. He regularly handles and negotiates settlements in multi-party, high exposure cases and is asked to assist others in resolving significant cases.
Andy has drafted, reviewed and revised vessel investigation protocols, industrial hygiene policies, hazardous material abatement and training programs, purchase and sales agreements and berthing agreements. In addition to state and Federal Court, he has represented clients before administrative tribunals, including the U.S. Department of Labor and the California Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board He regularly presents at in house training programs and at seminars, and has recently spoke on current events in asbestos litigation, maintenance and cure, the anatomy of a lawsuit, shipboard accident investigation and documentation and ethics in claims handling.
