Career
Christopher Staker has extensive experience in international law and public law at both national and international levels. He appears in cases before international courts (such as the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR)) as well as before national courts and tribunals, and advises, in matters involving international law, human rights, European law, immigration and asylum law, administrative and public law, and tax.
Positions that he has previously held include Principal Legal Secretary (head of the Legal Department) at the International Court of Justice (The Hague), Deputy (Chief) Prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone (Freetown), Senior Appeals Counsel at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (The Hague), Counsel Assisting the Solicitor-General of Australia (Canberra), and counsel in the Office of International Law of the Australian federal Attorney-General’s Department (Canberra). He originally trained as a diplomat with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs.
Christopher is appointed to the Attorney General’s Public International Law A Panel, as well as the Treasury A Panel.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
He has also been called to the bar in the Republic of Ireland and has been admitted to practice as a lawyer (Rechtsanwalt) in Germany.
Christopher is fluent in French and German.

Christopher Staker of 39 Essex Chambers has earned a strong reputation for his representation of sovereign states in high-profile public international law and international criminal law mandates. He accepts instructions from the UK government, as an A Panellist on the Attorney-General's Public International Law Panel. He is called to the Bar in the Republic of Ireland and qualified to practise as a lawyer in Germany.
Christopher Staker frequently represents the Home Secretary in human rights immigration and asylum cases, involving issues of family life and trafficking, among others. He has appeared before the Court of Appeal on numerous occasions in such cases.
