Practice Areas
James E. Hogan is a partner working in Dentons' Paris and Baku offices. He is a Senior Partner in the Baku office, where he served as Managing Partner from 2007 to 2021. Active in international practice since 1984, James has concentrated exclusively on corporate, commercial and natural resource matters relating to the CIS and Eastern Europe since 1988, with particular emphasis on Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation, and Ukraine. His experience includes advising on investment strategies, the establishment of joint ventures and cooperation structures, privatisation, licensing and related tax, currency, customs, environmental, governance and other matters. He also frequently advises financial institutions, development banks and investment funds in the areas of investment and secured lending, as well as capital markets work. He is particularly active in the structuring, negotiation and implementation of petroleum, mining and energy projects in the region. His experience has included PSAs, service agreements, concessions, oil-field service and drilling contracts, licensing and pipeline and marine transportation issues, including the sale and transportation of LNG, as well as renewable energy.
Career
James joined Dentons (formerly known as Salans) as an Associate in 1989 and became a Partner in 1992. From 1984 to 1988 he was an Associate at Arent, Fox, Kintner, Plotkin & Kahn, Washington, DC.
Professional Memberships
James was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar in 1984 and qualified as an avocat with the Paris Bar in 1992. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the International Bar Association and serves on the Board of the International Tax & Investment Center (ITIC).
