James specialises in commercial litigation and arbitration, with particular expertise in civil fraud, banking, financial services, sanctions, financial crime, cryptoassets, gambling, art and cultural heritage, company and shareholder disputes, energy, professional negligence, regulatory and professional disciplinary law, and commercial judicial review. Much of his work is international, including in the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Caribbean. Recent highlights include Morina v Scherbakova (proving validity of a missing wil for a large estate), Ambon v Finch (accounting fraud by the former directors and owners of an insurance broker), Tugushev v Orlov and Roth (dispute over Russiaā€™s largest fishing group), AXA SA v Genworth Financial International Holdings (Ā£500+ million share purchase agreement dispute relating to PPI), Medsted Associates Ltd v Canaccord Genuity (claim concerning fiduciary duties of brokers), Medlands (PTC) Ltd v St Johnā€™s Trust Company (Pvt) Ltd (trust litigation in Bermuda), and BML Properties Ltd v China Construction America (dispute over the $3.5 bilion Baha Mar resort in the Bahamas).
