Jane Ryan specialises in civil liberties, public law and human rights.
She has a particular specialism in complex high profile investigations including into the circumstances of the death of a baby at HMP Styal and the MSX investigation into systemic racism at HMP Bristol. She acts for core participants in the Covid 19 Public Inquiry and in the Lampard Public Inquiry into the deaths of mental health inpatients in Essex. Her areas of expertise include discrimination claims, constitutional torts, health & social care and human rights.
Jane writes regularly for Legal Action Group on prison law and has published articles on pregnant women in detention and transgender rights in criminal justice. She speaks at events relating to LGBTQ+ and women’s rights. She provides legal training on individual rights and the state to other lawyers as well as Non-Governmental Organisations.
