Career

Kevin Vick began his legal career as a law clerk for the Honorable Florence-Marie Cooper of the United States District Court for the Central District of California. After his clerkship, Kevin worked in the Century City office of O'Melveny & Myers and the Los Angeles offices of Davis Wright Tremaine and Bostwick & Jassy before co-founding Jassy Vick Carolan in 2013.

Kevin Vick is a co-author of the Ninth Circuit chapter in Media Libel Law: 50-State Survey, published annually by LexisNexis and the Media Law Resource Center. He also has served as a contributing author to The Right to Know: A Guide to Public Access and Media Law, published by the California Newspaper Publishers Association and First Amendment Coalition.

Kevin has also published a number of articles regarding First Amendment, media and entertainment law issues, including an article he co-authored with his partner Jean-Paul Jassy "Why a Federal Right of Publicity Statute Is Necessary," 28 Comm. Law. 14 (2011).

Kevin Vick lived in Barcelona, Spain from 1995-1998, speaks Spanish and has represented clients in Spanish-language media litigation.

Work Highlights

Colborn v. Netflix Inc., 661 F.Supp.3d 838 (E.D. Wis. 2023). Kevin led a team that successfully defended the filmmakers and production company behind the Emmy Award winning Netflix docuseries Making a Murderer in a defamation suit regarding the series.

In recent years, Kevin has represented clients, including a sports agency and leading dating websites, in numerous successful arbitrations before JAMS and the AAA.

A.H. v. Labana, 2022 WL 17687172 (Cal. Ct. App. 2022) Kevin led a team that prevailed in the Santa Clara Superior Court and the Court of Appeal on an anti-SLAPP motion brought on behalf of a client who had been sued for defamation in connection with statements connected to a protest march. The trial court struck the defamation claim based on Section 230(c) of the Communications Decency Act.

Newell v. Univision Communications, Inc. (Los Angeles Superior Court 2021). Kevin successfully defended Univision in defamation case arising from television coverage regarding issues of wage theft. The court granted Univision’s anti-SLAPP motion and struck the complaint in its entirety.

Home Decor Center, Inc. v. Google Inc. 2013 WL 10858861 (C.D. Cal. May 9, 2013), aff'd on appeal. Kevin led a team that obtained summary judgment for Google against claims for trademark infringement and unfair competition under the Lanham Act and interference with contractual relations relating to Google’s AdWords program.

Kaplan Stahler Agency v. Gumer (Los Angeles Superior Court 2013). Kevin and team successfully defended an entertainment talent agency against breach of contract, wrongful constructive discharge and related claims brought by a former employee. The agency prevailed on those claims after a three-week bench trial.

Riggs v. MySpace, Inc., 444 F. App'x 986 (9th Cir. 2011). Obtained dismissal of negligence claims pursuant to the Communications Decency Act, 47 U.S.C. § 230(c)(1), where plaintiff had sued based on MySpace’s deletion of her online profile.
