Michael is a partner in the Tax, M&A, Private Equity and Private Client practices. He has a broad tax practice with a particular focus on large, complex, cross-border mergers & acquisitions. Clients turn to him for meticulous and innovative tax advice. He works with major Canadian, US and other publicly traded companies, private equity and hedge funds, as well as tax-exempt institutions on investments, divestments, financings, fund formations, mergers & acquisitions, reorganizations and real estate and resource projects. Michael provides counsel on disputes with tax authorities and has particular expertise in international tax issues including foreign affiliate and transfer pricing matters. He also advises high-net worth individuals and their family offices on estate planning, personal trusts, and immigration and emigration matters. A frequent speaker at tax conferences in Canada and abroad, Michael has also published extensively in a variety of tax periodicals. He is a councillor and president of the Canadian Branch of the International Fiscal Association. He is a contributing editor to Wolsters Kluwer International Tax Journal.
