Reuben W. Wolfson is member of the Employment Law division of Smithey Law Group LLC, where he regularly advises employers and employees on all matters relating to employment law, such as discrimination, including race, sex, pregnancy, national origin, age, family responsibilities and religion; sexual harassment; retaliation and reprisal; claims prevention; representation of public sector employees; disability accommodation and discrimination; wrongful discharge; employment contracts and restrictive covenants; wage and hour issues; and employment class and collective actions.

Mr. Wolfson is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and the District of Columbia Bar Association. Mr. Wolfson is also a member of the Metropolitan Washington Employment Lawyers Association, where he actively serves on the Bench Bar Committee, including one of its subcommittees.
Work Highlights
Mr. Wolfson is one of Maryland’s leading employment lawyers. His public cases include i) obtaining a six-figure verdict for a county firefighter for a failure to promote claim after a four-day jury trial; ii) obtaining a five-figure verdict for a nurse for a common law wrongful discharge claim following a four-day jury trial; iii) securing a six-figure settlement for an executive in the construction industry during a lawsuit involving claims of disability discrimination; iv) obtaining a six-figure settlement for a senior engineer at a publicly traded multinational defense contractor in a case involving claims of gender and disability discrimination and retaliation. Media outlets from around the country covered the case; v) obtaining a six-figure pre-litigation settlement for the executive director of an industry association who brought claims of age discrimination; vi) successfully representing a non-profit director and receiving his client a five-figure separation agreement, which included an agreement not to contest the client’s application for unemployment benefits as well as mutual confidentiality and mutual non-disparagement; obtaining a six-figure settlement for an anesthesiologist after prevailing on a novel legal argument in a motion to dismiss hearing in claims involving disability discrimination, retaliation, and tortious interference with contract; and representing a locally-based national marketing company in complex litigation against multiple defendants involving, among other claims, breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, tortious interference with contract, Maryland Uniform Trade Secrets Act, and breach of contract.
Experience
A native of Montgomery County, Maryland, and graduate of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, Mr. Wolfson completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan. Following his time in Ann Arbor, Mr. Wolfson returned to the Washington, DC metro area, where he spent several years as a paralegal at Boies Schiller Flexner LLP working on antitrust litigation. Mr. Wolfson received his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Miami School of Law, where he served as Symposium Editor of the International and Comparative Law Review. Mr. Wolfson previously interned with the Honorable Peter J. Messitte at the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. Prior to joining Smithey Law Group LLC in 2018, Mr. Wolfson served as an associate at Rifkin Weiner Livingston LLC in Annapolis, Maryland, as a member of its employment litigation practice, where he worked hand in hand with Joyce Smithey, who served as Mr. Wolfson’s mentor and with whom he went to Smithey Law Group LLC in June 2018 when Ms. Smithey started her boutique employment litigation firm serving employers and employees throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia. He is admitted to practice in the state of Maryland and the District of Columbia as well as the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland and U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
