Career
Meserve was a Chairman of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, serving as the principal government official with responsibility for regulating nuclear power plants and nuclear materials. He is President Emeritus of the Carnegie Institution for Science and Chairman of the International Nuclear Safety Group (chartered by the International Atomic Energy Agency). He serves as an International Adviser to Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority and as an Executive Adviser to Japan’s Nuclear Risk Research Center. He served on the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board, as co-chair of DOE’s Nuclear Energy Advisory Committee, and as a member or chairman of numerous studies undertaken by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.
Personal
Meserve has a PhD in applied physics from Stanford University and a JD from Harvard Law School. He is a Fellow the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Physical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science; a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Philosophical Society; and a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
