Practice Areas

Practicing in commercial real estate and serving as the mayor of Urbandale, Iowa, since 2005, Bob Andeweg values his work on behalf of both his clients and constituents.

In his practice, Bob finds his clients the most expeditious and beneficial solution—that’s his main objective. Bob’s commercial real estate practice is a mix of transactional work, development, and leasing. He works with a mix of clients including developers and smaller real estate investors, and he also handles the real estate elements of some of Nyemaster’s clients’ larger deals.

For him, every deal is an opportunity to be responsive to the client’s needs, creative in accomplishing their goals, and proficient in his work. “There are a lot of different aspects to real estate,” he says. “You can have sales transactions, and you can have leases, and you can have other aspects in commercial transactions—it’s a wide range of issues to deal with that I enjoy.”

No matter his client, Bob’s goal is the same: To get a deal done correctly and quickly. That’s not to say that closing a deal can’t sometimes be challenging. While most of his real estate transactions move fairly fast and without problems, issues can arise.

“There are contentious times, of course, and real estate deals can end up in litigation, but for the most part the deals happen pretty quickly,” he says. “The people involved want to get the deal done, and they want it done correctly.” And because real estate deals can happen with buyers and sellers across state lines, Bob has become proficient in multiple jurisdictions, including learning how state laws vary and might influence his transactions.

Keeping these challenges in mind, Bob prides himself on finding the creative solution. “There’s not a cookie-cutter approach to everything in real estate,” he says. “Depending on the circumstances, any number of issues could come up that you have to really think through to accomplish the best result for the client.”

He feels the same way about his mayoral responsibilities in Urbandale. “My community involvement is very important to me, and being involved at a local level and with local government is my passion,” he says. While handling basic services such as fire and police protection or water and sewer services might seem mundane, getting them to operate effectively—without disruption—is important. Bob likes to make sure things get done right—in his practice and in his community.
