Practice Areas
Ms. Yolanda Álvarez is admitted to practice before the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. She was a Certified Mediator licensed by the Puerto Rico Supreme Court Alternate Dispute Resolution Methods Bureau, which contributes to her negotiation skills.
Before founding ÁLVAREZ LEGAL, Ms. Álvarez was the Vice-Chair of the Litigation Department and Chair of the Copyrights and Entertainment Divisions of a medium size law firm. She is an accomplished intellectual property attorney and litigator, who has successfully represented clients in complex litigation matters, including multinational corporations in local and federal courts. Her main areas of practice are Trademarks, Copyrights, Entertainment, Contract Law and Commercial Litigation.
Career
Ms. Álvarez’s ample work experience includes roles as Trademark Examiner, Communications Director for the University of Puerto Rico, Public Relations Advisor of multinational and local companies, Journalist and Chief Editor of major publications. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Puerto Rico School of Law and has been a speaker at various local and national conferences.
Ms. Álvarez has been actively involved in non-profit organizations such as the Special Olympics and the Film Foundation of Puerto Rico. She has also been recognized for her efforts towards the well-being of animals on the island, including her involvement in the drafting of Act 154 of August 4, 2008, one of the most progressive legislations towards animal protection in the world.
Her involvement in the American Bar Association includes roles as Chair of the Intellectual Property Law Committee and Chair of International Issues of the Animal Law Committee within the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section.
Professional Memberships
Ms. Álvarez is a member of the Puerto Rico Bar Association (CAPR); in 2007 she founded the Animal Law Committee within the organization. She also is a member of the Inter-American Association of Intellectual Property (ASIPI) and the Latin-American Red of Animal Protection (LAPA). She is currently the president of the Board of Directors of the Puerto Rico Animal Protection Federation (FePA).
