Provided by Williams LLP

Williams LLP is a unique firm: it is a small firm with depth. It provides sophisticated legal services to its clients across the globe, including clients in New York, West Africa, and to Americans and Europeans seeking to do business in West Africa and elsewhere. Our firm is based in New York. Our typical clients are companies, especially small and medium-sized companies, and individuals doing business around the world. A substantial part of our practice focus on representing government officials from West Africa, who have business or legal needs in New York or around the United States. We have also represented New York City officials.

Our firm is a hidden gem in that we have delivered the results our clients want at a fraction of the cost.

  • International Arbitration: For small and medium-sized businesses, going global is a good thing. Goods and services sold in international markets can bring all kinds of gains to a business. A business that is going to participate in international markets and reap the benefits must know and navigate the pitfalls of the international markets. We assist our clients with all legal issues that arise from doing business in other countries.

  • Complex Commercial Litigation: Complex commercial litigation involves disputes between businesses or sophisticated individuals that rise issues under corporate law, contract law, and business torts. We have successfully represented plaintiffs and defendants in matters ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions of dollars at stake. We have represented plaintiffs and defendants in disputes involving business partnership breakups, in disputes that arise from merger and acquisitions, in disputes that involve offshore trusts, in general contract disputes, and in disputes involving digital currencies.

  • Mergers and Acquisition Litigation: When companies merge, litigation can arise. We have represented plaintiffs and defendants with issues that arise from successful or failed mergers. We have successfully helped clients navigate pre-and-post litigation issues that arise from mergers.

  • GDPR Litigation: The General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) can be a complex regulation for businesses—large and small. GDPR is a European Union (“EU”) law, but it applies outside of the EU because it applies to businesses and nonprofits processing personal data of persons who reside in the EU. We have successfully helped our clients understand GDPR’s scope, data categorization, exemptions, and other issues.

  • Chapter 15 Bankruptcy Proceedings: Chapter 15 proceedings became part of the Bankruptcy Code in 2005, as part of the changes Congress made to the Bankruptcy Code. We assist clients who are looking to file main and nonmain proceedings in the US.

  • Non-competition Agreements: Employers use noncompetition agreements to protect their business. Among the most prominent issues employers face are whether the Noncompetition is supported by adequate consideration and whether the noncompetition is reasonable in scope and duration. We have represented employers and employees in resolving these and other issues, including issues that come up in drafting noncompetition agreements.

  • Partnership Disputes/Business Divorces: Disputes between business partners are common. We have assisted business partners in all facets of forming and dissolving partnerships, disassociating from partnership, or resolving issues that arise through litigation or settlement. We have also litigated cases in which the amounts involved ranged from $1 million dollars to $19 million dollars.

  • United Nations Practice: We have also advised Permanent Missions and Consulates on the Financial Regulations of the United Nations, on the United Nations Anti-corruption regulations and standards, on issues related to the United Nations Office of Internal Oversight Services, and on asset recovery.

  • Employment and Workplace Law: Our employment law practice focus on representing domestic and international clients on various issues. We have, for example, assisted clients with hiring and firing employees, classifying workers, designing leave policies, wage disputes, sexual harassment, sex discrimination in wage payments, among other issues.

A large portion of our international work focuses on obtaining discovery for "interested parties" to a foreign proceeding (whether the proceeding is civil or criminal) who seek documents and other discoverable items from individuals or entities that are based in the United States. This type of discovery is conducted under 28 U.S.C. § 1782. For 15 years, our firm has performed this work for our clients based in different countries around the world. More often than not, we are able to obtain discovery without making an Application for Judicial Assistance to the court.

We also assist clients with purchasing properties across the world. We have structured property purchases all across Eastern and Western Europe, in Thailand, in China, and in other parts of the world.
