Practice Areas

Ashford is involved in a range of alternative investment fund establishment projects, advising on both regulated and unregulated investment fund transactions throughout Africa. He specialises in the formation and structuring of alternative investment funds across a diverse range of asset classes and has advised and acted for local and international private equity and venture capital firms looking to raise funds for deployment in South Africa and/or Africa generally. In addition, Ashford advises sponsors and asset managers relative to their internal carried interest structuring and related economic and governance arrangements. He also advises various development finance institutions, other institutional investors, as well as high net worth individuals relative to investing into Africa focused private equity, infrastructure, healthcare, energy, real estate, gender-lens, debt, credit, mezzanine, buyout and venture capital funds across various sectors.

Ashford also has experience assisting clients with regulatory and transactional matters throughout Africa and has previously advised on establishing operations in various African jurisdictions. Specifically, he advised a major Canadian corporate in the mining sector, on the formation and establishment of a subsidiary in Ethiopia and has advised other major corporate entities (both domestic and international) on their expansion into Sub-Saharan Africa either through establishing a presence in, and/or incorporating subsidiaries, as well as acquisitions in the various African jurisdictions.

He is active across the continent and has deep experience and expertise advising asset managers across sub-Saharan Africa. Specifically, he has substantial experience in relation to the establishment of funds domiciled in Mauritius, Botswana, South Africa and Nigeria.

His expertise has been recognised by The Legal 500 and he was awarded Rising Star: Professional Services at the 2019 Accenture Rising Star Awards.
