David is a highly experienced lawyer who specialises in advising employers in relation to all aspects of employment law. His clients include both private and public sector employers including Local Authorities and Universities.

Leading a team of employment lawyers in Nottingham, David provides high level strategic advice on matters such as TUPE, reorganisations, equal pay and industrial relations. He helps employers to navigate and adapt to new legal developments.

David also handles employment litigation including complex and sensitive claims such as discrimination and whistleblowing claims as well as more routine unfair dismissal claims. He has experience of representing employers facing multi-claimant claims. He has considerable advocacy experience as well as conducting mediations. David’s approach to litigation was informed by his LLM in Advanced Litigation.

In addition to his advisory and litigation work, David regularly provides training and updates to clients. He also acts for senior employees in relation to their employment and termination of employment. He has also acted in high profile cases for individual employees securing in one case compensation in the high six figures.

David’s approach is to provide pragmatic and clear advice aimed at securing the desired outcome.

Career

David has been with Freeths LLP for 37 years and as an articled clerk became involved in the seminal case of Singh v The Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire which attracted national media interest.

Recent work and notable cases include assisting a private sector employer with a complex equal pay case, winning an employment status case, helping an employer to resist strike action, defending multiple claimant TUPE claims, investigating and dismissing Local Authority statutory officers and successfully defending complex discrimination claims.

David became a partner in 1994 and served as the national head of employment before taking on his current role. He is passionate about developing and coaching lawyers in his team, many of whom have gone on to become excellent employment lawyers.
