Gonçalo Falcão is a partner at Mayer Brown in the Global Energy Group, working on Corporate & Securities issues as well as on both Domestic and International Tax structures. He represents clients around the globe and particularly throughout Africa, including Angola, Namibia, Mozambique, Senegal. Guinea-Bissau, Ghana, Cote D’ Ivoire, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, and São Tomé & Príncipe. Much of his work in these countries involves representing oil and gas exploration and production companies as well as oilfield service providers. Gonçalo drafts and negotiates the several types of contracts typically used within the Energy Industry and addresses all regulatory requirements applicable on the relevant country of operations. In addition, Gonçalo reviews and advise on all substantial tax matters involved in major Energy and Infrastructure projects plus all legal specificities dealing with foreign investment, local content (where applicable) labor and immigration requirements. When required, notably on Corporate Finance deals, Gonçalo addresses all legal topics related with the enforcement of guarantees as well as applicable foreign exchange rules that may impact investment projects and that are key to build the project risk assessment. He is licensed to practice law in both Brazil and Portugal, being a foreign legal expert on the jurisdictions outlined above.
Before joining that firm, he practiced law for five years at offices in Portugal and Brazil as a member of the Miranda Law Firm. He also practiced in Portugal and the Nederlands from 1998 to 2004 with several other firms, including KPMG (as Tax Manager), Castro Silva & Associados and Arthur Andersen. Gonçalo is fluent in English, Spanish and French as well as Portuguese.
Gonçalo Falcão served as a Tax professor at the Energy (Oil & Gas) and Corporate Law LLMs of the Luanda (Angola) Agostinho Neto Faculty of Law. Currently, Gonçalo Falcão is a professor of Corporate Finance at an Energy Think Thank LLM of the Portuguese Catholic University (Lisbon) Faculty of Law.
