Career

In full-time practice since 2002 specialising in all aspects of maritime law, international trade and insurance, Huang Hui has handled numerous complex, influential and typical cases, including a number of landmark cases in the history of maritime judicial practice and foreign-related legal services in China.

He was lead counsel in matters selected for Top 10 Landmark Cases of the Year and Top 10 Typical Maritime Cases of the Year by the Supreme People’s Court, GAZETTE OF THE SUPREME PEOPLE’S COURT, Guiding Cases of the Supreme People’s Court, Lloyd’s Law Reports, Chinese Maritime and Commercial Law Reports, Top 10 Typical Marine Traffic Accidents 2010-2020 released by the Ministry of Transportation, Typical Cross-border Disputes in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, Ten Typical Cases of Mutual Enforcement of Arbitral Awards between Mainland China and the HKSAR, and Outstanding Cases of Legal Services in the Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Greater Bay Area 2019 -2022, and Typical Cases on the Application of International Treaties and International Practices in Foreign-related Civil and Commercial Cases by the Supreme People’s Court.

He is highly experienced in foreign-related matters and has been invited to give testimony as expert in Chinese law in courts or arbitration tribunals in New York, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Panama and other regions and achieved very satisfactory results for the clients.

Work Highlights

1. Successfully represented claimant in PICC Zhongshan v CPIC Dongguan (dispute over double insurance) before China' Supreme Court. The case was selected into GAZETTE OF THE SUPREME PEOPLE'S COURT [2023] Issue 9 and included by Informa UK plc. in its Chinese Maritime and Commercial Law Report [2023] Vol 4.

2. Successfully represented defendant in Guangzhou Shipping Materials Supply Co. Ltd. v TAN BINH CO., LTD (collision) which was selected for“Typical Cases on the Application of International Treaties and International Practices in Foreign-related Civil and Commercial Cases” by China’s Supreme Court in December 2023.

3. Successfully represented one of the defendants in A.P. Moller Singapore Pte Ltd v Zhongshenghe Industry Co. Ltd. et al. The case was selected for "Top 10 Typical Cases of the Year 2022" by Guangzhou Maritime Court and for“Nationwide Outstanding Court Cases for the Year 2022” by China’s Supreme Court, and was awarded "Exemplary Deal" by LegalOne. Besides, Huang Hui won "Annual Achievement Awards 2022" presented by Guangzhou Lawyers Association for his representation in this case.

4. Represented Chinese ocean-going fishing vessel interests in death claims involving crew of multiple nationalities (matter value: over RMB 65 million). The case received special instructions from China's president and premier. The accident and search-and-rescue operations were extensively covered by international and domestic media, attracting wide public concerns in the international and domestic communities. Huang Hui's constructive advice on procuring swift, separate settlement with the families of crew members and the inclusion of confidentiality clauses, effectively allayed public pressure faced by the local government. In recognition of his professional competence and experience, Huang Hui was appointed by Yantai Penglai District Law Society as its chief legal advisor.
