Jonathan’s practice includes human rights, public law, national security, immigration, and inquests and inquiries He acts for a wide range of clients including individuals, global companies and the government.
He has acted in a large number of national security cases for many years. He is regularly instructed as Counsel to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal including recent high profile challenges by Liberty and Privacy International as well as by journalists in Northern Ireland. Recent public law cases for the government include the challenge to the decision to deprive Shamima Begum of her UK citizenship and the challenge to the export of arms to Saudi Arabia for use in the Yemen conflict. He acted in Strasbourg proceedings for Khodorkovsky, the former CEO of Yukos, against Russia, and has been instructed in a significant number of cases from Russia and the former CIS. He regularly advises on immigration both for high net worth individuals and for the government.
He is instructed by core participants in the Covid-19 and previously acted in the Grenfell Tower Azelle Rodney, Duggan, In Amenas and Bloody Sunday inquires. He advises the Attorney General on applications to reopen inquests, and notably advised on reopening the inquests of those who died in the Hillsborough Stadium disaster and the death of Dr David Kelly.
