Experience
María Esther Fernández A. Pou is a highly experienced lawyer with a career spanning over three decades. She holds a law degree (Summa Cum Laude) from the National University Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) (1990), specializing in Air and Space Law at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and a Master’s in International Law with a focus on Aviation, Maritime, and Space Law from the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. Throughout her career, Maria Esther has developed expertise in various legal fields, including civil aviation, airport law, maritime and port law, customs, logistics, free trade zones, public procurement, regulatory matters, business and corporate law, tax law, mergers and acquisitions, financing structuring, real estate, international trade, foreign investment, consumer rights, e-commerce, arbitration, and litigation.
She has been involved in numerous significant transactions and projects across these sectors.
Her extensive knowledge and leadership have earned recognition from prestigious legal directories such as Chambers Latin America and Global, Legal 500, Who’s Who Legal, and Latin Lawyer. She has served as Legal Counsel for the Airlines Association (ALA) and the Airports Association in the Dominican Republic, providing legal advice to private sector clients in the aeronautics and airport sectors. Additionally, Maria Esther has represented the Dominican Republic at key international organizations like the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Latin American Civil Aviation Commission (LACAC).
She has contributed as a speaker at national and international conferences and as a professor at universities, specializing in arbitration, mediation, and her core legal areas. Maria Esther has also participated in legislative reforms, including the Civil Aeronautics Law, Company Law, Arbitration Law, Ports Bill, and the Mercantile Restructuring and Judicial Liquidation Bill. She serves as a Judicial Interpreter and Arbitrator with the Commerce and Production Chamber of Santo Domingo.
Currently, she is a member of the Legal Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (AMCHAMDR), a Board Member of the Institutionalidad y Justicia Foundation (FINJUS), and holds memberships in the Inter-American Bar Association, the National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE), and the Latin American Association of Air and Space Law (ALADA), among other professional organizations.
