Matthew is a commercial barrister with a particular focus on technology and telecoms-related disputes. Matthew acts and advises in relation to the full range traditional technology disputes, such as project failures and delays, IP licensing, copyright infringement, breach of confidence, outsourcing agreements, data protection, digital media, e/m-commerce and digital rights management; he also has expertise in relation to disputes arising out of cyber liability and data, blockchain technologies and AI. Prior to coming to the bar, Matthew worked as a software developer, system administrator and technical writer. He was one of the authors of the Legal Statement on Cryptoassets and Smart Contracts issued by the Jurisdiction Taskforce of the UK’s Lawtech Delivery Panel and its subsequent Legal Statement on Digital Transactions. He is the author of two books on systems administration and is co-editor of and contributor to The Law of Artificial Intelligence (Sweet & Maxwell, 2020; 2nd edition 2024). He is on the Nominet DRS panel of experts and is a Trustee of the Society of Computers and Law.
