Practice Areas
Mike Williams is a trial lawyer who leads the representation of businesses, individuals, and governments in high-stakes litigation. Since joining Kirkland & Ellis after a clerkship on the Supreme Court, Mike’s practice serves clients who need aggressive courtroom counsel and creative strategic judgment. This practice includes plaintiff-side representation in cases involving broken deals and commercial misconduct, for which Mike recently secured and collected a $665 million award on behalf of a client. The practice also includes complex mass-tort liability management through trial litigation, counseling, and potential restructuring. Mike is a leader in providing pro bono representation, having successfully represented death-row inmates with innocence and intellectual-disability claims, territorial governments in landmark constitutional litigation about their sovereignty and self-determination, and civil-rights plaintiffs in First-Amendment cases. In addition, Mike is an adjunct professor of trial advocacy at Georgetown University Law Center and devotes a significant part of his time to teaching, sponsoring, and mentoring lawyers, with a particular focus on first-generation lawyers and college students.
