Career
A partner in the Construction Practice, Ted Gropman has devoted his practice exclusively to construction law for more than 43 years, including the representation of contractors, subcontractors, design professionals and institutional owners on private and public works projects. Ted has extensive experience in litigation and arbitration of disputes involving delay and impact claims, scope of work disputes, mechanic’s liens and stop notices, bid protests and construction defects, as well as contract drafting and review. Ted’s experience includes: recovering $11.4 million for a general contractor after a 3-1/2 month jury trial involving a 2-1/2 year delay in construction of a hotel, recovering (after trial and appeal) $10.9 million for an electrical subcontractor on its pass-through claims against a public entity owner of a large waste treatment plant in Southern California; recovering more than $7 million for a general contractor in litigation over construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Northern California; recovering more than $13 million for a general contractor on its extra work and delay/disruption claims on a public works college project; and successfully arguing to the California Supreme Court the unenforceability of a “pay if paid” clause in a subcontract.
