Vik is a partner at Herbert Smith Freehills on long-term secondment to Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung. He heads our Indonesia corporate practice and specialises in cross-border M&A and private equity, with particular expertise in financial services, fintech, TMT, healthcare, consumer and real estate sectors.

Vik has broad experience in cross-border transactions involving Asia and the UK, with particular specialisation in Indonesia, where he has been based since 2012.

Vik is described by clients as “very competent and knowledgeable in market and regulatory practices” and “always generous with his time and knowledge”. He has an “excellent reputation for handling complex cross-border mandates” and is “one of the best lawyers that I've had the pleasure to work with.”

Career

Vik previously spent 10 years in London working at a “magic circle” firm, and 5 years at Herbert Smith Freehills in Singapore, working on cross-border M&A transactions before re-locating to Jakarta, where he has spent the last 12 years of his career. He has also previously been seconded to Morgan Stanley in London.

Professional Memberships

Vik is qualified to practise in England and Wales.

He is a registered foreign lawyer by the Indonesian Bar Association (Peradi).

Private Capital

• CVC on its acquisition of a controlling stake in Siloam Hospitals

• Carlyle and Southern Capital Group on their ~US$1.17 billion divestment of ~94% stake in Solusi Tunas Pratama Tbk, an Indonesian listed mobile tower and telecommunication infrastructure company, to PT Profesional Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Protelindo)

• Sinar Mas on its exit from PT Inti Bangun Sejahtera Tbk, an independent tower company

Real Estate

• PT Nirvana Wastu Pratama (NWP), a subsidiary of Warburg Pincus, on its acquisition of a shopping mall (D’Mall) and hotel (Hotel Santika) in a mixed-use property complex in Depok, West Java

• GIC on its c.US$350 million forward purchase of Capital Place, an office tower in central Jakarta. This landmark real estate M&A transaction was the first ‘forward purchase’ of an entire office tower by a foreign investor in Indonesia, involving complex security and other arrangements to mitigate development risks.
