Practice Areas
Neil is Co-Leader of McMillan’s Competition, Antitrust & Foreign Investment and International Trade groups, and member of the firm’s Board of Partners. His competition practice focuses on Competition Act and Investment Canada Act merger clearances, cartel investigations and class actions, abuse of dominance proceedings and compliance issues. He was counsel to a defendant in the Godfrey case in which the Supreme Court of Canada clarified the standard for certification of competition class actions and the availability of umbrella purchaser claims. He is the Global Contributing Editor for Lexology / GTDT’s annual Cartel Regulation deskbook, and he won GCR’s Dealmaker of the Year award in 2016. Nil also has extensive experience with net benefit and national security reviews under the Investment Canada Act. Neil’s trade law practice includes anti-dumping and subsidy proceedings, export controls, sanctions, and foreign corrupt practices. He is particularly experienced in energy, financial services, pharmaceuticals/chemicals, agri-food, natural resources, transportation, and media/technology sectors. ABA – member of the Antitrust Law Section’s International Comments & Policy Committee. IBA – past chair, Antitrust Section; co-chair, Mergers Working Group. CBA – Vice Chair of the Competition Law & Foreign Investment Review Section. Doctorate in competition law (University of Toronto – 1993).
